What We Fear Statement
The Grudge shows concepts of fear that make the viewers want to watch more, but also hide under their blankets at the same time. Peoples fears are based off of things that we think can harm us, like monsters for example. The grudge is a fictional monster in horror films, she has long black hair that covers her face, she walks in a crab like way while snapping her bones, and she makes terrifying sounds when you least expect it. The grudge also has the power to possess humans and animals. Possession is a huge culture fear, people fear not being able to have control over their own bodies. In my film, I want to show societies fears by having those fears become a monster.
I like how the the film shows the fear of the unknown and how it involves jump scares at the best spots. I also like how it has a background storyline and plot, which makes it even creepier. I don’t like how bad the editing is in the film, you can tell the editors didn’t spend much time on making it look more realistic. There is one scene in The Grudge 3, which has the grudge running across the screen, the grudge in that scene looks like a cut out from a book, it doesn’t look real. I can try and spend a lot more time on the editing to make sure it looks realistic. I’m no expert on editing, but I will try my best to focus on getting the fear in with jump scares, creepy music, dark spaces, creepy setting, and more.
The Grudge 3 takes place in an apartment building in 2009. Changing the setting to a cemetery or abandoned building can show the fear of the unknown. Having the time period become very modern will be scarier, having people see something that could possibly happen in their everyday lives is terrifying. Changing the characters won’t do much, the film is mainly the grudge/antagonist, a main character/protagonist, and the victims. There are multiple grudge movies and spin offs of the grudge. I want my film to be a more modern, everyday feel to those fears shown in the other grudge films.
My central message in my film will be, the fear of the unknown in everyday life. I will be commenting on how in society people tend to over look the little things that are important and how you never know what could be hiding in plain sight if your all wrapped up in social media and the internet. The more modern version of the grudge will show peoples everyday lives involved with horror and fear. The sociological term “seeing the strange in the familiar” focuses on interpreting the view of and outsider and how they see what’s familiar and normal for us. The term “Uncanny” also has the idea that it’s unsettling if we see something not normal to us in our safe environment. I’m using those terms in my film, seeing fear in things that we think are normal and safe gives the idea of horror. I hope that my audience will consider looking at things more closely outside the world of social media and the internet, because you will never know what you will find and you will regret it when’s its to late.
