Fear in Different Forms
In my film, I intend on using all the topics of fear that are used in horror movies, that I think will make my film the most knowledgeable and scary. I mostly want to focus on the feat of the unknown, which I think is the fear that occurs the most in the film, along with possession. Fear of the unknown form fear in a whole different way, It builds suspense leaving you watching more, but also makes you want to hide in fear. I want to add that not all fear of the unknown is bad though, which I will show through the characters actions. I want to acknowledge how social media shapes our actions and feelings, and how that makes us do stuff we never thought we would do. Along with that I want to include a different sort of possession than the ones in the original films. I want to make the concept that social media is the possession taking over our bodies and making us do horrific things because of revenge and hate, instead of the devil physically and mentally possessing them. I also want to add how superstition can make us believe different things and can change how we act around situations, I will show that with the characters interacting within the film. I won’t be adding a lot of jump scares because I want to focus more on the deep concept of fear and the meanings of it. Lastly, I will portray how uncanny events makes us feel and how terrifying it is when the characters experience it. Uncanny fear can make people feel the most unsafe and vulnerable in horror situations. Horror has many different types of fears, in my film I will bring together the fears to make an adaptation of The Grudge.

“Overcoming the fear of the unknown enriches our lives; Wise old words continue to resonate even today.”
The article is is talking about how everyone experiences the fear of the unknown is some sort of way in their lives. The boy in the article, Tim, is talking about how his father told him how on the road to life we all don’t know where its leading us, but all we have to do is experience it even if we are scared of not knowing what’s ahead. In the article Tim notes that, “There is not a person drawing breath that has not suffered the fear and anxiety of a new job, a new tertiary discipline, or a simple wish to gain acceptance within their peer group. It is the unknown and unfamiliar environments that enrich our experiences and shape us as individuals.” (Overcoming the fear of the unknown). This quote talks about how we all experience fear in some way when we don’t know what’s going to happen next. We use that fear of the unknown to understand concepts in the world better. The fear of the unknown is a huge theme in the movie, The Grudge. I’m using this article to express “fear of the unknown” in a new way. I want to use the idea that fearing the unknown I us think all bad, but sometimes good.
“Exorcist: Horror costumes can lead to possession.”
This article talks about two kinds of possessions, there is the possessed by the devil kind, and then there is the possession from costumes of horror characters. It also talks about how when your possessed, the spirts make you do things like throw up, shown in this quote, “At least 11 spirits seemed to have attached themselves to the boy after the ghost hunting episode at the abandoned hospital," Roque recounted......“ He vomitted 11 times which indicated the departure of each of the 11 spirits," he said. (Exorcist: Horror costumes). This quote is saying how the spirts might be showing him a message in some way by throwing up. An exorcist named Marius Roque notes that,
“Marius Roque, exorcist for the Archdiocese of San Fernando, told The STAR yesterday he has performed exorcism rites involving two young persons under such circumstances. "One was the case of a teenage girl who wore a black lady costume for a Halloween party in San Matias (San Fernando).”After a few weeks, it became obvious she was possessed by evil spirits," he recalled. Roque said when the girl was brought to his parish in San Fernando, he found her mouth and belly button emitting froth.” (Exorcist: Horror costumes).
This quote talks about how a girl that wore a scary Halloween costume got possessed because of the evil in the costume. I want to use this article to adapt my film by using how exorcism works in the world and how it’s used in the movie The Grudge. I’m going to use possession and the fear of possession in the world to adapt my film.
“Hollywood Curse Legends”
This article talks about curses causing deaths on Hollywood sets. It explains that famous Hollywood actresses/actors would die after they were starring in horror films. Author, Brett Taylor notes that in this quote, “It is something of a stretch to blame MacGowran's death on The Exorcist, as he died on another continent four weeks after all his scenes had been filmed.“ (Taylor, 47). This quotes talks about how an actor named Jack MacGowran died 4 weeks after his scenes on The Exorcist. Curses are different in everyones mind, you either believe it, or you don’t. I want to use how superstitious some people are, and how some people might believe in curses and some might not, and how it might effects someones interpretation of fear and horror.
“What grinds our gears: Jump scares and unnecessary gore in horror movies”
In the article, Winona Young expresses her feelings about gore and jump scares in horror films. She talks about how she doesn’t like how horror movies use jump scares to give people fear. Young notes that, “Too often, the blood and guts seem like they're there purely for shock value, rather than genuine audience terror.” (What grinds our gears). In the quote it’s saying how gore is used probably for shock value not to put fear in the audience. Young also notes that, “The same goes for jump scares. They're a lazy way of scaring the audience that just makes for an unmemorable kind of adrenaline. I want to feel emotionally uncomfortable, not just as if my roommate snuck up on me in the kitchen.” (What grinds our gears). In this quote, Young mentions how jump scares don’t give the right fear, instead it just makes you scared for a second but not fear throughout the whole movie. In my film, I want to use this article to express how jump scares and gore are not going to play a huge role in the film. I will add one or two jump scares to keep the film interesting.
*“Monstrous Technologies”
This section in the book Monster Culture in the 21st Century, it talks about how technologies is used badly and how people abuse it. It talks about how we turn into monsters on the internet and in real life because of technology. In the book it quotes that, “We share evidence of our own monstrosity through social media. In other words, we embrace and resist the multiple ways in which technology permeates, constructs, but also challenges subjectivities, bodies, and identities in the twenty-first century.” (9). In the quote it makes it clear that technology distracts you from what’s most important. Technology becomes the monster and reels you in with it. Using this section, I can talk about how technology ignites the monster inside us, in my film adaptation. I also want to talk about how people should focus more on the outside world more than what’s on their screen.
“Psychoanalytical approach to monsters”
This section in the book Monster Culture in the 21st Century it talks about how the use of the term “uncanny” connects to horror movies and fear. Sigmund Freud writes that, “The uncanny is that class of frightening which leads back to what is known of old and long familiar....This uncanny is in reality nothing new or alien, but something that is familiar and old-established in the mind and which has become alienated from it only through the process of repression.” (3). In the quote it talks about how uncanny fear is scary because it’s so familiar to us. Uncanny events make up a horror film. In the Grudge, the concept of uncanny occurs throughout the whole thing. In the third Grudge movie the setting is in an apartment building (which is considered familiar and safe for those who live in it) but when the grudge starts to roam and spread its evil through the apartment, it becomes uncanny because it’s an uneasy feeling with something that is familiar to you. In my film I’m going to use the idea of how “uncanny” spreads fear in horror films.
